Get Started on your Books: The top 5 Things to Study in Advance

Pilot study essentials are often misunderstood by aspiring pilots who might believe that flying just requires intuition. But it doesn’t – it takes skills, which is based on research that pilots have been studying for YEARS. And the skills to become a pilot aren’t something that you’re born with. Sure, there are people out there who have a knack for flying, the same way there are people out there who simply know how to drive the second they’re behind the wheel. But it’s too risky to simply allow people to become pilots if they’re not fully trained or well-researched.

Here’s the harsh truth about being a pilot – it’s not easy to be one. Not only do you have to deal with financial constraints and the hours of flying that you need to have under your belt but you also have to study a wide range of topics. You might be wondering what these topics could be so we’ll give you a list of the top five things you need to study in advance.

To be an amazing pilot, you need a good grasp of the controls in the cockpit. Additionally, you need to know what to do in high-risk situations which are mostly caused by the weather. These are the things you simply can’t do a crash course on. Even a ten-hour-long YouTube video wouldn’t be enough to get you guys really acquainted with the things you’ll be dealing with on a daily.

1. National Airspace System

Did you know that the sky is broken into invisible airspace boundaries? These boundaries also come with their own unique set of procedural requirements and equipment. Just like on the physical road, you need to adhere to these rules and regulations if you want to be a good pilot and avoid any violations. But most importantly, these rules are there to keep you safe!

2. Weather Principles

Since you’re going to be up in the air all the time, you need be to fully aware of your surroundings. The weather is going to be unpredictable and more dangerous than when you’re driving on the road in the safety of your car. You also have to take note that the passengers are relying on YOU for their safe travels. You can go ahead and study the basics of the weather, such as warm fronts, cold fronts, and the Coriolis effect. They play a vital role in your flight training so it’s always good to be prepared.

3. Basic Aerodynamics

If you’ve never heard of the word ‘aerodynamics’ before, you might want to consider the career path you want for yourself. Just kidding! Aerodynamics helps you understand the way objects move through the air. This is especially important for pilots who need to establish a firm understanding of flying.

4. FAA Regulations

The Federal Aviation Administration or the FAA, for short, is the largest transportation agency of the U.S. government. They are in charge of regulating all types of civil aviation within the country and the surrounding international waters as well. By knowing and fully understanding the FAA Regulations, you are able to minimize violations or mistakes throughout training.

5. Aircraft Systems

This might be one of the most complicated subjects to read on, not necessarily because it’s so difficult but because of the pressure it takes to fully understand and embrace these systems. You will be working closely with these controls when you’re finally a pilot. By researching these systems early on, it will be easier to familiarize and memorize them later on.

At the end of the day, the number of books you have to read will be worth it when you finally get to live your dream and fly through the skies!
